Tottenham Hotspur stadium workers haven’t been paid
A group of electricians working on Tottenham’s new stadium claim they have been left with no money in the run up to Christmas having not being paid for weeks. They want the club to help resolve the situation, claiming the company contracted to install fire alarms, Tyco, is refusing to release their wages on a technicality.Tottenham’s new stadium is close to completion3

Electrician Harvey Kirk told talkSPORT: “We’ve been grafting, doing 80 hour weeks at Tottenham for months and suddenly we’re out of money. This should not be happening.”He and nine others are being represented by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain.Chairman of IWGB’s Electrical Workers Branch, Sam McDouall, told talkSPORT: “Tottenham have an outstanding reputation for being morally and ethically fair. So we are very suprised that they are allowing their contactors to act in a morally and ethically poor way.”A Tottenham Hotspur FC spokesman said: “This is a matter between Tyco and its subcontractors.”The agency supplying electricians to Tyco has ceased trading and merged with another firm. But as National Resourcing Solutions (NRS) became part of BCL Recruitment the wages owed to its electricians fell through the cracks.Work has been ongoing at Tottenham’s new stadium since 20163

A Tyco statement said: “Tyco is not refusing to pay workers. The agency with which Tyco is engaged is responsible for making payments to its workers directly.”Ellise Strickland, 24, is missing more than 3,500. She told talkSPORT: “I have no money and Christmas is coming. How am I meant to say to my neice and nephew ‘Oh, I haven’t got you anything this year’. I can’t explain it to a four year old.”She has been making phone calls in an attempt to access her wages. “It’s frustrating. Everyone passes the buck to the next person, and no-one wants to pay.”Since NRS collapsed other firms to have used its workers have paid tradesmen who were owed money. Mr McDouall said: “Tyco are witholding pay due to a technicality. It is not a matter of them double paying, they are simply not transfering the money.”Tyco added that it “has worked to resolve issues regarding the submission of incorrect invoices in order that payments can be made.”Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium was due to open on September 15 but “issues with the critical safety systems” meant it was delayed. On 26 October the club confirmed all its remaining matches in 2018 would be played at Wembley.Tottenham’s new stadium is set to open in 20193

The electricians feel the club should be doing more to resolve the stalemate.Worker Harvey Kirk added: “It is a 1billion project – probably more by the time it’s finished – and I’m having to scratch around and go into my overdraft to pay rent and get fares home for Christmas. I would call it a fairly serious failing: certainly on behalf of Tyco, and perhaps Tottenham if they don’t apply enough pressure.”
Tottenhams new stadium will NOT take them to the next level, Piers Morgan tells talkSPORT
Ellise Strickland was on holiday in Thailand on the date she expected payment and had to suspend her activities while sourcing funds from family. She believes more tradespeople on Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium project could be affected than the ten already known about.“I think so. BCL have more than one trade on site. But I don’t know if other companies would have paid out.”Tyco said: “It is Tyco’s policy to pay agencies in line with agreed payment terms and on submittal of valid invoices.”Mr Kirk said the problems have come at the worst possible time: “As all tradesmen know it can get tight around Christmas. It’s the one time of year that’s very expensive and you really don’t want to be out of pocket.”
