Tottenham’s Champions League turnaround proves they aren’t bottlers

At points it felt like lose-lose for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, beat Barca and, according to rivals, they would only have won against a ‘second string’ side which had utilised Lionel Messi for 30 minutes and had two players signed from more than 100million in their XI.Lose, or draw and go out, then they would have been humiliated by the same second string side, who hadn’t even needed to play Messi for 90 minutes.Instead, it turns out Tottenham Hotspur, once again, proved they are not the bottle jobs they’re often accused of being.Lucas Moura celebrates the goal which earned Spurs qualification.3

The draw, although to supporters it feels like a win, came thanks to Lucas Moura’s goal after 85 minutes of the match. This means Spurs, going into the final ten minutes, were set to be eliminated in all three of the final group stage games but managed to save themselves every time.Against PSV Eindhoven it took an 89th minute Harry Kane goal Wembley, before Christian Eriksen struck with ten minutes to go at the same venue against Inter Milan. And against Barcelona it was Lucas Moura’s turn to be the hero as he turned Kane’s cross home from close range. So much for bottlers! When guts and guile were the order of the night, Pochettino’s men served it up in spades, dominating against all three, and that should be a lesson for any opponents his side come up against in the near future.
