Raheem Sterling: Manchester City forward is ‘definitely NOT’ targeted because he’s black, former Arsenal and Chelsea star Ashley Cole says
Ashley Cole believes Manchester City star Raheem Sterling is an ‘easy target’ for the media rather than being singled out for criticism because he is black.Sterling was the subject of alleged racial abuse towards the end of last year, with Chelsea suspending four supporters amid an investigation into the behaviour towards the England forward during the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League defeat of Manchester City.Sterling was subjected to a torrent of abuse at Stamford Bridge2

The 24-year-old later released an emotional Instagram post which criticised newspapers for ‘helping to fuel racism’ with their negative portrayal of young black footballers in relation to their white contemporaries.
View this post on Instagram Good morning I just want to say , I am not normally the person to talk a lot but when I think I need my point to heard I will speak up. Regarding what was said at the Chelsea game as you can see by my reaction I just had to laugh because I dont expect no better. For example you have two young players starting out there careers both play for the same team, both have done the right thing. Which is buy a new house for there mothers who have put in a lot of time and love into helping them get where they are, but look how the news papers get there message across for the young black player and then for the young white payer. I think this in unacceptable both innocent have not done a thing wrong but just by the way it has been worded. This young black kid is looked at in a bad light. Which helps fuel racism an aggressive behaviour, so for all the news papers that dont understand why people are racist in this day and age all i have to say is have a second thought about fair publicity an give all players an equal chance.A post shared by Raheem Sterling x (@sterling7) on
Sterling was widely praised for his decision to call out the media’s alleged latent racism, having had to deal with a large number of negative stories about his own life throughout his career.Cole, the former Arsenal, Chelsea and England defender, hadan occasionally fractious relationship with the media when he was at his peak, and he sees parallels with his situation and how Sterling is treated. However, the 38-year-old does not think racism plays a part in the discrimination, with Cole believing Sterling being seen as an ‘easy target’ is not because of skin colour.“There’s definitely similarities but mine was probably caused more than him,” Cole said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “I don’t think he’s done anything wrong.Cole had to deal with abuse throughout much of his career2

“I mucked up a few times so I get my situation but with Raheem, he was just more of an easy target.“I’m not saying it’s because he’s black. No, it’s definitely not that. I just felt that they make him more of an easy target.“They keep putting him in the paper with a new car, a new tattoo. People are going to start to think different things and you’re going to have that stigma with it. I just feel it was a little bit too much.”

To concede a match before the kick-off by fielding an artificially weak team is in contravention of Rule 10E in the FA handbook, which says that every club must field its strongest available team in all matches in all senior competitions. The concept that every team goes out to do their best in every match is what keeps the game honest.
